Located in the north of the country, the Atacama Desert is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Chile. Walk around this area and you will be able to enjoy some incredible scenery, including salt lakes, Moon Valley, the Tatio Geysers and the famous Valle de la Muerte. This is the driest desert anywhere in the world, and stretches for 600 miles along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is 40,600 square miles in size.
This is one of the most beautiful national parks in the world, and a highlight of any walking holiday in Chile. Walk around the park on your visit and the main attractions you will see are the huge granite walls which stretch up 6,000 feet into the sky which have to be seen to be believed. The park is located in the south of Patagonia on the Paine Massif, and it is a hiker's paradise. There are lots of mountains to climb and glaciers to marvel at, and it is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
This is another spectacular national park in Chile, located in the Cordillera de la Costa in the Valparaíso region of the country. It is small at only 31 square miles, but it is home to a rare forest of Chilean Palms which used to be found far and wide. The Cerro la Campana is also worth a climb, and in doing so you will be following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin.
Discover the dense Nothofagus forests in this national park, as well as rivers, valleys and other natural features. If you like birdwatching, you will be in your element and should look out for the Black-throated Huet-Huet, the flightless Steamer Ducks, Black-Necked swans and many more. Also keep an eye out for pumas, kodkods and grey foxes amongst other fauna. You can even visit the hot springs in winter.
