What To Do in London
Are
you looking for things to do in London? I'll give you a brief
description of various popular attractions. Whether you're a history
lover or on a budget, there's always something to do in London.
Get an overview of London
Consider
taking a guided cruise on the Thames River. Tour boats have two decks.
The top deck is open, so you'll get a great view as you pass by
landmarks. A professional guide will teach you about the city's history
while you relax.
There are hop-on hop-off double decker buses
running throughout the city. For a do-it-yourself approach, take a ride
on one of London's famous red public buses. Bring a guide book and try
finding famous landmarks yourself.
Spend a day at the British Museum
Founded
in 1753, the British Museum has over eight million historic artifacts.
It's also an excellent choice for budget conscious travelers because
it's free. Be sure to see the Rosetta Stone which was crucial in
decoding Egyptian hieroglyphics. You'll also find the sole surviving
manuscript of Beowulf here.
Walk across the Tower Bridge
Built
in 1886, the Tower Bridge is a cultural icon of London. Two towers,
each 213 feet high, are connected by a suspension bridge. The bridge
itself is about 800 feet long. It's estimated that 40,000 people cross
the Tower Bridge every day. Tourists can go inside the towers to see the
hydraulic system and steam engines.
Visit the Tower of London
Built
in 1078, the Tower of London is currently home to the Crown Jewels. Its
official name is Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress. The tower is a
jack of all trades building. It has previously been a castle, armory,
and prison. Be sure to arrive early because there's usually a long line
of tourists waiting to see the Crown Jewels.
Get a panoramic view from St Paul's Cathedral
While
the architecture is fascinating, the most beautiful view you'll get at
St Paul's Cathedral is from the dome. It's nestled on top of Ludgate
Hill, the tallest hill in London. The cathedral's dome is a 500 step
journey up a staircase. You'll have an amazing 360 degree view of
Central London.
Ride the London Eye
At 443
feet high, the London Eye is the tallest ferris wheel in Europe. A ride
on the ferris wheel will last half an hour. At the highest point, you'll
have fantastic views of London. At night, the London Eye is lit up with
blue lights. It's perfect for couples.
Take a photo with Big Ben
Built
in 1858, Big Ben stands at 315 feet high. The clock tower's official
name is the Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben started out as the nickname for the
main 13.5 tons clock bell. The tower has a minor lean towards the North
West. It's closed for tourists, but UK residents can make an
appointment to go inside. Be sure to arrive on the hour to hear the main
bell ring.
